I have had my 42″ Vizio 1080p for just over two years. I LOVED the tv when it worked. The picture and sound was great. One morning I woke up and went to turn the tv on when I realized it was dead. No warning, no nothing. The tv would turn on and off, but I had no picture and no sound. After some research I discovered this is a common problem with Vizio. Do your research before you buy. I will never buy another Vizio bc now I am stuck buying another LCD 2 years later. What a waste of money.

PS-When I called Vizio they were no help. They knew exactly what our problem was, but because it was over 2 years couldn’t help us. They need to fix this problem on this end and not make tvs that die after a few years.

I loved the VIZIO SV421XVT. The picture quality was great. The sound, using the internal speakers was kind of hit-or-miss depending on how it interpreted the Surround encoding. I ended up compensating by turning off the advanced Audio features. I missed a feature that our older Panasonic LCD had – Closed Caption on Mute. It’s a great feature and it comes in handy when a program is on and a call comes in.

Once again, I found the picture quality to be great! But there was one aspect of this TV that forced me to return it – The TV emits a nasty hot plastic odor when running. We gave it two whole weeks to “air out” but it never got any better. The plastic stink was the first thing that I would smell when walking into the room. I finally got sick of it and sent it back.

After, I did a sniff check of other >40″ LCD TV’s. I found that all of the Vizio’s had the plastic stink, as did Toshiba. Sony, Sharp and Panasonic had no plastic smell at all.

Samsung TV’s had a mild plastic smell, but the Samsung LED LCD TVs had no plastic smell at all – maybe the ultra-thin chassis doesn’t use the same kind of plastic.

So, if you are thinking of getting a Vizio, find a new one on display and give the top venting a quick sniff. Most people don’t have problems with the smell, but if you do, you will want to avoid these TVs.

We recently received our second TV. The first one failed out of the box within 10 minutes. Customer service, while helpful was also tedious. Why do they insist on reading the script … geez. Over an hour on the phone to finally conclude, the TV doesn’t work and needs to be replaced. I was advised after sending proof of purchase they would contact me to arrange the replacement. That never happened and three days later I had to call. Another hour on the phone with a automaton reading a script to the same conclusion, TV needs to be replaced. With replacement authorized it took nearly two weeks for the replacement TV to arrive. So, TV purchased 12/27 (two weeks to get original delivery and two weeks replacement delivery) is finally set up and working 1/30! At least it arrived in time for the Super Bowl. Side note I was always dealing with Vizio customer service. Perhaps Amazon would have been more helpful and more responsive, but hopefully there will be no need for a next time.

Picture quality is great. Set up was easy, although the remote should allow separate control of satellite box and audio volume without having to press the “cable” and the “audio” button in between. I am using separate audio so no opinion on audio.
